Inches to feet calculator
To convert inches to feet, divide by 12 and keep the remainder as inches: 75-3/8 in is 6 ft 3-3/8 in, or 6.2813 ft as a decimal. Type a length the way a tape reads it, in inches, feet and inches, decimal feet, or decimal inches, and this converts it every other way, with the fraction rounded to the nearest 1/16, 1/32, or 1/64 in. It works the other direction too: feet to inches, and decimal feet back to a tape reading.

How the conversion works
Inches to feet and inches: divide the whole inches by 12. The quotient is the feet, the remainder is the inches, and any fraction rides along unchanged. 75-3/8 in is 6 ft (72 in) with 3-3/8 in left over.
Inches to decimal feet: divide the whole length, fraction included, by 12. 75-3/8 in is 75.375 ÷ 12 = 6.28125 ft, which reads 6.2813 at four decimal places. Feet to inches goes the other way: multiply by 12 and add the inches.
Decimal feet to a tape reading: multiply by 12 for inches, then multiply the decimal part of an inch by 16 (or 32, or 64) and round to the nearest whole number to get the fraction. The calculator does this the way the CutOnce app does: it stores every length as an exact count of sixty-fourths of an inch, then rounds once more to the fraction you choose.
Worked examples
A tape reading to feet: 75-3/8 in
| 75 ÷ 12 | 6 ft, remainder 3 in |
| Carry the fraction | 6 ft 3-3/8 in |
| 75.375 ÷ 12 | 6.28125 ft, shown as 6.2813 ft |
Decimal feet from a plan to a tape: 6.28 ft
| 6.28 × 12 | 75.36 in |
| 0.36 × 16 = 5.76, rounds to 6/16 | 6 ft 3-3/8 in |
| 0.36 × 64 = 23.04, rounds to 23/64 | 6 ft 3-23/64 in |
Plans, laser measures, and site surveys often give decimal feet. Read at 1/16 in, 6.28 ft and 6.28125 ft land on the same mark, 3-3/8 in past 6 ft; at 1/64 in they are 1/64 in apart.

What the app adds
This page converts between feet, inches, and fractions. The app's calculator converts the same lengths to yards, meters, centimeters, and millimeters from the keypad, keeps a running tape of your work, and adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides lengths without converting them first.
Common questions
- How many feet is 75 inches?
- 6 ft 3 in, or 6.25 ft. Divide 75 by 12: 6 with 3 left over.
- How do I convert feet to inches?
- Multiply the feet by 12 and add the inches. 5 ft 6 in is 5 × 12 + 6 = 66 in.
- How do I convert decimal feet to feet and inches?
- Keep the whole feet, multiply the decimal part by 12 for inches, then multiply the leftover decimal inch by 16 and round for sixteenths. 6.28 ft is 6 ft plus 0.28 × 12 = 3.36 in, and 0.36 × 16 = 5.76, which rounds to 6/16 = 3/8. The answer is 6 ft 3-3/8 in.
- What is 0.1 ft in inches?
- 1-3/16 in. A tenth of a foot is exactly 1.2 in, and 0.2 in is closest to 3/16 on a tape. Surveyors and site plans use tenths of a foot, so this one comes up often.
- Why does the calculator round to sixty-fourths first?
- That is how the CutOnce app stores lengths: as a whole number of sixty-fourths of an inch, so adding and subtracting never drifts. The display then rounds once more to the 1/16, 1/32, or 1/64 you pick, the way you would read the tape.
